Jobs: Short-term hope, long-term despair

Friday’s jobs report showed some glimmers of a recovery but if you’re among the 8.8 million Americans still unemployed after nearly four months, you may have been left scratching your head.

Positive Jobs Report Doesn’t Ease Worries of a ‘Double Dip’

Even as the jobless rate held steady at 9.7 percent and the 36,000 workers laid off in February was much less than expected, economists and investment analysts said it’s still too early to discount the economy’s chances of revisiting recession.

Unemployment rate: 9.7 percent. Underemployment: far higher.

What the report didn’t say: Almost 17 percent of Americans are underemployed, according to the BLS. A recent Gallup poll puts the figure at almost 20 percent.
This means that nearly 30 million Americans are unemployed or working fewer hours than they’d like, which could put a big drag on any economic recovery.
